By age 10, he had mastered the art of vocal control and became a pro on the drums, playing professionally for local, district, and state choirs of Illinois and Indiana. It wasnt long after falling in love with drumming before he was drawn to guitar (lead and bass), keys, and the instrumentation of writing songs
His mother (Evangelist Evora Baker) was an elite choir director, strict disciplinarian, and exceptional down south gospel singer who turned down an opportunity to tour the country with a Major Gospel Recording Artist, due to the ages of her young children. After self teaching YM how to read his first word, she began enrolling him in a string of educational ventures and district theatricals... ....as part of an attempt to protect his future, and to get him a ticket out of their low income, and drug infested project housing.
His recognitions and works include but aren't limited to the following
Lil Webbie (A1 and Savagelife Ent) Miltickit (Grammy Award Producer for "Georgia" by Ludacris) Ron Spaulding (Spaulding Group, former VP of Asylum) Big Fub (Former Manager and Head of Promotions for Twista) Logic (Midwest Producer for Wyclef) Kevin Shine (Chi-Town Radio Personality, former Def Jam Rep) Vakseen (Slip N Slide A&R) and many more
In addition to writing and producing for several artist, Young Maine has played for hundreds of Gospel services and state competitions, including COGIC's Midwest Music Conference, and the live recording of the ST Choir album. His older brothers (Tyrone "Ty the Hustla" and Michael "Pepper" Townsell) were both experienced producers and engineers. Ty (the oldest) helped cultivate Young Maine's penmanship from a rapper stand point, and showed him the business side of how to manage an artist and company. Pepper helped spark YM's creative side in the world of producing and vocal projection along with the proper knowledge of an artist/producer's publishing rights. The two had over a decade of experience with producing and cultivating artist, which is where YM got his start at assisting in writing, composing vocal arrangements, and producing for other artist at the age of 10.
After over 15 years of working from behind the scenes humbly, but undeniable as "the hit man," he is ready to be recognized by the world. When questioned about being so mult-talented (businessman, musician, engineer, rap/singer) he replies, "I have no worries or 2nd thoughts about doin me. (grins) I'm the type that doesnt tell everything, but in so many words, I'm not worried about my street credibility if thats what your referring to."
"To be honest, Im from the struggle so i obviously represent the streets, But im a representation of so much more. Being a true musician has allowed me to be diverse and universal to the point where I can relate to any "real individual." I love diversity. (he smiles) Im an originated church made musician, from the church and street, with no genre big enough 2 lock me in it. I produce all styles of music (pop, gospel, alternative, r&b, tv and movie scores, ect.) But since most of my own work under Young Maine is hiphop/r&b, I guess u can label me as a hip hop artist. Much love, and blessings to you and yours." |
